So Much Fun it Should be Illegal

For those of you that are not familiar with it, the Kala uBass is a Baritone Ukulele with a 20″ scale bass neck. The instrument is tuned in fourths (EADG) just like an electric or standup acoustic bass. In fact, this little guy sounds so much like a standup bass that it’s eerie.

And the uBass is so much fun to play. It’s practically weightless, it’s tiny, but it sounds huge. They are available in fretted and fretless versions, with various body woods. They use polyurethane strings called Pahoehoe strings (the same ones can be used on an Ashbory bass).

But don’t take my word for it. Listen to the uBass in the hands of a master bass player, namely Bakithi Kumalo. Check out a video of him playing a uBass at the 2010 NAMM show here.
