Not that we’re obsessed with Nik West and her purple uBass or anything (OK, we are. So sue us.)

Ms. West just uploaded a funky rendition of Prince’s “Kiss” using her new Signature uBass. She notes the song is played “clean” without any effects.

Here it is on YouTube for you to enjoy.

And while you’re at it, here’s the original Prince version, which by the way, doesn’t have an actual baseline.

Nik West Drops New Single

Nik West Purple Unicorn

Nik West and her signature uBass on the cover of her new single, “Purple Unicorn.”

Ubass endorsing artist, superb bassist, friend of this blog and all-around great person, Nik West, just dropped a new single.

The track, called “Purple Unicorn,” features MonoNeon on guitar, Nik on bass and Lil John Roberts (Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, among others) on drums.

Check the song out on iTunes, Spotify or Tidal.

If, after listening to the song, you say to yourself: “Hmm. That sounds a lot like Prince.” Well, that’s probably because Prince was a mentor to and a friend of Nik’s. And a big musical influence on her.

Also, check out the new Nik West Signature uBass in all its purple goodness on the cover!

Happy Birthday to Us

Happy 7th Birthday to Us!

Today is our Birthday!

Today, we begin our seventh year of publishing.

There have been some changes over the years and I’m sure they will be plenty more as the years roll on.

Hopefully we’ll still be here seven years from now, bringing you the best of the uBass and small, portable travel instruments.

And hopefully you’ll still be with us too.

A Dream Come True

At least bassist Nik West’s dream anyway.

Last month we teased you with a first look at Ms. West’s Signature California Series uBass. Well, here’s what the uBass will look like when it’s done.

Nik posted this on her Instagram and Kala reposted it to it’s own Instagram. Or was it the other way around? Who knows. These things can be so confusing at times.

Anyway, the point is, the Nik West Signature uBass is ready for prime time.

Hopefully it’ll be available to buy soon for all of us non-signature worthy bassists out there.

Guild Debuts New Travel Bass

Guild-Jumbo-Junior-Bass

Guild Guitars at Summer NAMM introduced an acoustic/electric travel-sized, short-scale bass. The oxymoronically (is that even a word?) named Jumbo Junior Bass is a 23 3/4 inch scale four-string bass in the company’s Westerly Collection of guitars and basses.

The company says the Jumbo Junior Bass features a Sitka Spruce top and arched Flame Maple back, with a Maple neck and Ebony fingerboard.

Guild notes:

We chose a solid Sitka spruce top and arched flamed maple back to mirror the tonewoods that have been used in upright bass construction for centuries, resulting in a clear, tight bass tone that is impressive for its reduced size.

The Specs include:

Body Back and Sides: Layered Flamed Maple
Bracing: Scalloped Sitka Spruce

Here it is. A first look at the newest in the line of Kala Signature uBasses. The Nik West Solidbody, in – what else – Purple Sparkle.

This one is a four string. No word yet on when these will hit the shelves or how much they’ll cost.

Ms. West previewed this on her Instagram. She notes it’ll have Roundwound strings.

I’m sure she’ll let us know when they are ready for the masses.

Stay tuned.
